Bild: Piracy in Historical Asia
This video documentation provides an introduction into the manifold aspects and characteristics of piracy in early modern Asia. We discuss the interplay between government decrees and ‘piracy', explain why ordinary overseas merchants suddenly became pirates, and how Asian piracy differed over space and time – for example in the Canton and the Ganges River delta.

The documentation also introduces individual pirates, including female pirates, and interviews a modern 20th-century ship captain who was once attacked by pirates in the Malacca Straits. He shared his experience with us.
